Thanksgiving Traditions

When I was growing up, my family had a tradition of going to my aunt and uncle’s house for Thanksgiving.  My siblings and I dreaded having to go.  We would have to dress up in our good clothes, sit at the kids’ table, and then eat food that we didn’t like.

Fast forward to today, and I can happily say that my Thanksgiving traditions have evolved.  Part of the changes happened when I started hosting my own Thanksgiving.  Some of my tradition changes came along after doing the Ideal Protein protocol and I wanted to maintain my success.  

Here are some tips that I’ve learned over the years to help you have a successful Thanksgiving:

  1. Make sure you start the day with a good breakfast.
    In other words, don’t skip a meal to “save” calories for later.  It’s easy to overeat when you’re really hungry.
  2. Do an activity that isn’t centered on food.
    Take a walk through Carkeek Park to see the salmon or volunteer at the Seattle Turkey Trot.  The holidays aren’t just about eating.
  3. Offer to bring a salad or side dish.
    So many dishes at Thanksgiving can be heavy. A fresh salad with shaved brussel sprouts, sliced red onions, and cucumbers topped with a lemon vinaigrette is a nice change.  Other recipes can be found at www.align-wellness.com/karen-knights-blog.  
  4. Have plenty of sparkling water on hand.
    If you want to dress up a LaCroix, add a slice of cucumber and sprig of fresh thyme.
  5. Send guests home with the leftovers.
    Get rid of anything that is off plan or really tempting.
