My Complicated Relationship with Trader Joes

Not too long ago I got myself into some trouble in the Ideal Protein community.  

I had recommended a new Trader Joe’s product to an online group of dieters. It was a new salad that was loaded with Phase 1 vegetables.  Upon closer inspection (and getting called out by some other coaches) I realized the dressing was not Phase 1 compliant.  Somewhere buried at the bottom of the list was sugar, artfully disguised as Dextrose.  My bad for not reading the label more carefully!

I’m telling on myself because I think it’s a common challenge many of us have – wanting the convenience of a place like Trader Joe’s while staying on protocol. Reading through all the ingredients of a product can be overwhelming.

The good news is there are several products that Trader Joe’s offers that are Ideal Protein-friendly and can be a great addition to your menu.  Here are some of my favorites:  

  • Pre-cut Jicama Sticks
  • Shaved Brussel Sprouts
  • Persian cucumbers
  • Fresh salsa (pico de gallo)
  • Fresh sauerkraut*
  • Frozen zucchini spirals
  • Kosher Dill Pickles
  • Riced cauliflower with lemon
  • Red Boat fish sauce
  • Spices, Spices, Spices
