Have the New Years Health Resolution pushers gotten to you yet? Are you considering actually committing to and doing what you’ve thought about for a long time? If so, you might want to read this.
Let’s face it, no one can eat a whole cake all at once; it has to be bite by bite starting with the current one. That’s the only way.
Changing health is exactly the same. Today’s choices are the only ones you need to change. You can’t change tomorrow’s or yesterday’s choices.
Working with clients, the highlights for changing eating habits for 2015 were as follows:
1. Discover your “Why”
What reasons add up to enough motivation that you are willing to sacrifice your unhealthy “comfort zone” for a healthy “discomfort zone” for long enough to see you through until your healthy choices become your “comfort zone habits?”
After all, you don’t have to struggle with making healthier choices your whole life. You only need to struggle until making better choices is your normal, daily habit. Then it will be harder, actually, to make choices that are not as good for your health.
If you know you really need to change some health habits and still can’t get yourself to do it, chances are that you haven’t done one of two things. Either:
- You haven’t created a list of benefits and rewards that is big enough and meaningful enough to truly motivate you and/or
- You haven’t created a meaningful list of the pain and suffering (however big or small) that will come to you if you don’t make the changes you want.
- Actually, I’ll add a third item here and that is that you don’t really want to change. As there is no moral judgment on this, you can happily do as you wish. Just know that you are putting your fate in the hands of the marketing gods who are selling you stuff (food and drugs) that is almost entirely just plain bad for you because that is where the money is for them.
2. Plan
Know what you’re going to eat tomorrow for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. If you don’t know what foods will lead you to health, find out (by working with us at align-wellness.com) and eat only those. Any other foods will move you in the wrong direction.
Know what supplements you need and take them. After all, just like having too little money creates a hole of debt; your body creates a hole of nutritional debt when you aren’t making good food choices. Heck, even if you were eating great all the time, you wouldn’t get enough nutrition for great health, let alone make up for years past. Following the RDA on vitamins and nutrition will surely keep you in nutritional debt forever.
And help your plan along by cleaning out all of the stuff from your house that is not healthy for you and your family.
3. Recommit
No one is robotically perfect. We’re all going to have days that challenge us. Falling of the proverbial wagon isn’t the end. But the further the wagon rolls down the trail before you get back on, the more you’re going to have to run to catch up! Ideally, you’ll get back on the wagon with your very next food choice.
